Exeter’s Emergency Roundtable: Retail in a Post-Covid City

Join us for an online Emergency Roundtable – ‘Retail in a post-Covid city’ – to take place at 6pm on Wednesday 17th June, as we explore the opportunities facing retail in a city determined to ‘Build Back Better’ and what is needed to enable businesses, and the sector as a whole, to continue to thrive.

From independent shop to department store, showroom to boutique, premises or online, this Roundtable is for retailers, those who rely on the sector, and those who have a vision for retail, in Exeter.

Through the discussion we’ll consider the widely held view that the role of cities is changing as a result of Covid-19, and what these changes mean for retailers in Exeter. For example: more people are likely to continue working at home; more cycling and walking is being encouraged; online sales have significantly increased; click and collect is on the rise; social distancing measures may affect shopping as a spontaneous activity; job losses may mean customers spend less; business closures or changes in operation could mean physical changes to the high street, neighbourhoods and retail parks.

It’s important, too, in light of these considerations, to ensure that Exeter remains a healthy place for its residents, workers and students, and is resilient in the face of further potential waves of Covid-19, and the spread of future diseases.

 

We also aim to:

  • Provide an opportunity for Exeter’s retailers to come together and take a view on what the changing dynamic of the city means for their business
  • Provide a supporting environment in which Exeter’s retailers can examine their business and how it might adapt in the short, medium and long term
  • Offer Exeter’s retailers a platform through which they can share best practice, whilst benefiting from input from both the city and peers
  • Support Exeter’s retailers in collectively determining solutions and resources they will need as part of this recovery, and identify those willing to take solutions forward

 

The findings from this Roundtable will be reported to Exeter City Council, Devon County Council, BID, Exeter Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses, the trader and retail associations and groups across Exeter, and the Liveable Exeter Place Board.

Longer-term, the intention is to influence policy in the city and engender a new culture of innovation in Exeter where people, communities and businesses are encouraged to ‘trial and fail’ in implementing new ideas and plans.
