Marketing and Events Officer

Exeter City Futures’ (CIC) vision is a carbon-neutral Exeter that remains a great place to live for future generations. We are working to achieve this through our mission: to bring Exeter’s businesses, individuals, communities and leaders together and provide the coordination and focus needed to deliver the city’s carbon ambitions. We have recently been appointed to support the CEO of Exeter City Council in the collective initiative to deliver a net zero Exeter by 2030.


The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for Marketing and Events Officer to join us on Exeter’s journey to being net-zero carbon by 2030. This role will support the delivery of a programme of networking events that will bring businesses and local communities together to address our most important challenges. Using Exeter City Futures Connect format, you will help to build awareness of Exeter’s ambitions and stimulate the formation of partnerships between businesses and communities that can take  practical action locally and across the City. Duties will include; supporting communication strategies, delivering social media campaigns and Connect event management tasks.

This role report to the Exeter City Futures Programme Development Manager. It is a part-time role, up to 18 hours per week, and can be delivered flexibly. There will be a requirement to support some evening events.

Job Responsibilities

Event management and facilitation

  • Manage and deliver Connect quarterly networking events including pre-event planning, timelines and post communications
  • Identify and build a network of speakers and communicate accordingly
  • Increase Connect audience and engagement within the City and region by building strategic networks and partnerships with attendees
  • Support speakers and attendees to connect, network and work together at each quarterly event
  • Secure venues for each quarterly Connect
  • Liaise with venues and caterers hosting Connect events
  • Collate event content

Ideas Management

  • Document and report on outputs from each quarterly event (project ideas, potential partnerships)
  • Map and monitor the progress of collaborative city projects arising from each quarterly event
  • Identify and develop an online mechanism to record, track and disseminate event content

Communications and promotion

  • Liaise with the Exeter City Futures Communications team to promote and publicise the events
  • Develop and copy write all social media messages and content
  • Post social media content across Exeter City Futures social media channels (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) using online editorial calendar to ensure content is timely, relevant, and engaging
  • Evaluate and refine Connect communications and marketing campaigns campaigns, and measuring the impact of reach and engagement through regular reporting
  • Lead in updating, monitoring and responding to enquiries on Eventbrite
  • Draft and deliver blog posts to support the Connect events
  • Keep up to date and informed on new social media trends and apply accordingly
  • Liaise with venue communications team to support the delivery of campaign messages

Job Skills & Qualifications


  • Passion for learning and growing in the sustainability and climate change field
  • Strong communicator with excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Experience of event management
  • Demonstrable experience / involvement in successful projects/campaigns/social media activities in the fields of sustainability and/or community engagement
  • Familiar with emerging platforms, digital media, and web/social media management and measurement tools (e.g. HootSuite, Buffer, Tweetdeck)
  • Familiar with creative design applications: Adobe Creative Suite or online alternatives
  • Must be flexible and self-driven personality with a keen sense of delivering completed tasks in a timely manner and an ability to work independently with limited supervision


  • Past work experience in event marketing
  • Comfortable with the MailChimp newsletter and marketing platform

  • Initial contract April – December 2020
  • Meets National Living Wage
